Due to lack of time to continue blogging I'm afraid to say that John Simm PR is to be closed down and not be posted on anymore. John Simm PR was made by myself on the 17th June 2007because of my interest in the life of John Simm. I actually, like my other site Torchwood PR, ran this site by myself at first but was later joined by the brilliant Rob who runs various sites including Life On Mars.TV and Ashes To Ashes.TV. As for John Simm news i would thoroughly recommend checking out The John Simm Appreciation Society as well as Life On Mars.TV. As for me i will still be around and about as i will continue to make Music Videos which can all be found on my You Tube Channel Here as well as chatting to anyone who wishes to speak to me. Could i take the time just to thank each and every visitor and helper to this site. That's it for me now so Have Fun Bye Bye.

The Damned United / Vote Simm

Here we are with another video piece from 24 Hr Party People. Today we have the trailer for you all to enjoy, which while it doesn't feature much of our man John. It is still quite entertaining. The trailer mainly features Steve Coogan (a comedian) in character as Tony Wilson the founder of Factory Records, New Order's label.

This trailer may very well have been the inspiration for the American trailer of "The Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy", when it was remade several years back. The trailer itself actually describes exactly what its doing (IE: Title Sequence here, company logo there, etc.), and is rather humorous. But then again it is being done by a comedian, so what else would you expect. The trailer can be viewed below, enjoy.

Hello all, back again with some more video goodness for you to enjoy. Today we have an excerpt from "24 Hr Party People", featuring footage of John in character as Bernard Sumner from New Order. In this clip we find John jamming in an old warehouse, singing the New Order classic "Blue Monday".

As I have told you in previous posts, I used to be a DJ. This particular track remained one the largest selling dance tracks of the year in 1983. It was also the third record I ever purchased. When released originally the track did not offer a radio or 7" version, this did not occur until it was remixed in 1988. The records "B-side" was nearly as popular as its "A-side" and was known as "The Beach".

"The Beach" is actually part of the lyrics to Blue Monday, which is where it gets its name from. The Beach proved to be so popular, that it to was remixed in 1988 for the B-side. The remix is known as "Beach Buggy" and is just a non-vocal version of Blue Monday. Okay that was your history lesson for the day, now enjoy John singing it.

As you would expect, both John and Phil have been fantastic, and the other two jewel thieves in their crew are Ashley Walters and Cristian Solimeno, and the dynamic between all four actors is terrific to watch. Everyone is very excited about the film - we have the same crew as "Devilwood", so you can expect it to look beautiful. Rounding out the cast is Kate Magowan and Dylan Brown from Devilwood, along with Kevin Mcnally (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Linal Haft (MoulinRouge).

The Weekend Has Landed (Part 3)

We finally make it to part 3. This post is not another video comparison, but contains a promo for the movie which is entitled "Human Traffic Pop Promo". Personally though, I think a better title for it would be "The Weekend Has Landed". In this promo or trailer whatever you would like to call it, we get to see a lot of the footage from the title sequence of both versions of the movie.

It does differ greatly from the movies, as it is presented in an un-edited format (ie: without special effects overlayed). It also follows the style of a music video, and if it was a single the artists name would more than likely have 'featuring John Simm' tacked onto the end of it. Sounds cliche, but is quite appropriate to the video. You'll understand when you've watched it. Any way, enjoy.

OK, peoples here we are with the second version of the comparison. In the first version, I presented the first 8 minutes and 56 seconds of both movies with the audio from the 'Original' movie. The second version is visually identical, but contains the audio from the 'Remixed' version. Doing the two different versions, allows us to see where we would be in the other version. Should we be watching them simultaneously.

Back once again Simm-sons and daughters, in my last post I was full of appologies about my promised post about Human Traffic versus Human Traffic Remixed. Thankfully during the course of this week, some of those problems I mentioned were rectified. It wasn't an easy task, especially seeing as I also got bombed with ad-ware courtesy of "System Doctor 2006".

Yes System Doctor 2006, you B@$+@>)$! For those of you who don't know what I am talking about, I am referring to a program similar to Norton System Mechanic 2007. This is a program designed to remove adware from your system, System Doctor however should be renamed 'System Natropath' as it infects your system first then requests you purchase the product to remove the infection. How thoughtful, yes? Yeah right, anyway you don't want hear about that, you want to hear about John. That's why you're here isn't it? OK, here we go then.

Firstly I need to point out the title of this post, "The Weekend Has Landed (Part 1)". It has been named as this because it is in 3 parts, each containing a video. This the first part contains my promised video comparison of the 2 films, they both start out differently and eventually fall back into sync. You will understand when you watch it. The synchronizing is not a natural occurrence with the 2 movies, they are not of equal duration at all but are very close. So I corrected this by adding all of 7 frames of black to the original.

The 'Original' starts out with the introduction of Johns character in the movie "JIPP", then John moves on to discussing his friends, KOOP, MOFF, LULU and NINA. After this the title kicks in, and the movie formally starts. In the 'Remixed' version, the film starts with MOFF having a speil about being off his pickle then jumps straight into the titles. After the titles both versions then sync, but not forever as there are many differences between the 2 movies.

The soundtrack differs on both of them, some scenes are extended or completely re-edited giving a totally new perspective on this ground breaking movie. Essentially though they both tell the same tale but in a slightly different way. In my last post I mentioned that there was about to be a third version of the movie thrown into the mix, will it be another re-edit? At this stage it is unknown, but lets keep our fingers crossed. It would be very interesting to see "Human Traffic 2007 (The Final Edit)", I like the sound of that and I am sure JIPP does too.

More Traffic . . . Again?

Hello Simm-sons & daughters. Today I bring you more from the John Simm classic, "Human Traffic". I know I have previously promised you a comparison between "Human Traffic" & "Human Traffic Remixed", but unfortunately I am still being plagued with PC issues which have now doubled on my system. Does this mean you won't be receiving it, after all this time? The answer to that is no, it will still come just in a longer time frame.

Some good news regarding this film though is that, a new edition is of the film is set to be released on the 24th of September 2007 (according to sendit.com). The dvd is currently available on pre-order via the link above, however no details of alternate editing or special features are available at this time. So if you like the movie, this version could be the one for your collection. In anticipation of this, below you can find the trailer of the movie to enjoy in the interim.

Life On Mars - Series 1 Synopsis & Ratings

Greetings Simm-sons and daughters, today myself and Bad Wolf (my co-conspirator) are going to bring to you the first of 2 breakdowns (as I like to call them) on the wonderful series Life On Mars. The critically acclaimed show is currently being repeated in the UK, and has just finished its initial screening of series 1 in Australia. For those of unfamiliar with the show, this is a great opportunity to get a heads-up on what maybe one of the most controversial shows of this decade.

Controversial? Yes, Life On Mars is a "no holds barred" view on life in the 1970's, in all its politically incorrect glory. It has been highly criticized in the UK tabloids, as well as the US press for obvious reasons. The majority of the critique comes from those sickening prudish people, known as teachers. Apparently they believe the show encourages anti-social behaviour such as the victimisation of minorities. It does not do this at all, it simply portrays that time period as accurately as TV possibly can and for this reason is not aimed at minors.

Now that the introduction is out of the way, the series . . . . . (drum roll).

SERIES ONE

Episode One: We meet DCI Sam Tyler in 2006, he has a car accident whilst in pursuit of a kidnapper. When Sam awakes, its 1973 and he's only a DI. We meet his new boss Gene Hunt, Ray and the "agreeable" Chris, also the lovely Annie Cartwright. Sam amazingly enough, finds a connection between a murder in 1973 and the kidnapping of his girlfriend in 2006.

Cyberman on Ep 1: I absolutely loved this episode when it premiered, its what got me hooked on the show. I heard about it through the internet, and was intrigued by its premise, so much so that I ordered the DVD as soon as it was available. As an episode I would give this one over all a 9/10, as it captivates the audience from the word go all the way to its conclusion. A stunning pilot episode, one of the most original cop shows in the last 20 years!

Bad Wolf on Ep 1: Well what can i say? this episode was truly brilliant and automatically gets you hooked to the show. The chemistry between Gene and Sam begins in this episode. Overall i would give it a 8/10.

Episode Two: Sam and Gene butt heads over a criminal. Gene wants to plant evidence to convict the criminal, Sam thinks otherwise. A woman gets caught in crossfire, as a result of Trent (the criminal) being released. Sam mops her blood off the street with his jacket, at Genes request.

Cyberman on Ep 2: This episode was very different to what I'd expected from the previous episode. The first episode sets up the storyline, this one fully throws it in your face! We truly discover how things have changed in policing over the last 30 years in this one. Gene simply wants people behind bars, to make the police appear competent, whereas Sam is a sucker for procedure. Truly upfront and a riveting episode from start to finish. Overall I'd give this one an 8/10. I take an additional point off for this one, due to ancillary cast members not fully being utilized. At this stage it is merely the Sam and Gene show with the occasional bit of Annie, but still great viewing.

Bad Wolf on Ep 2: This episode is all about Sam and Gene and modern day policing and 1970's policing. It shows how Sam wants hard-core evidence whereas Gene is prepared to plant evidence on the suspect. Overall i would give this a 8/10.

Episode Three: Sam goes to a textile factory with the team, to investigate a murder. The factory eventually gets turned into apartments, which is where Sam lives in 2006. Genes method of catching the crook, is the first to speak did it. Sam has other ideas, eventually discovering that it is not a murder at all, but a cover-up instead for an industrial accident.

Cyberman on Ep 3: The episode was the clincher for me, it connected the 2 time periods in the most novel of ways. A murder is committed in factory in 73, which is Sam's apartment in 06, brilliant writing Pharaoh & Graham! I give this one a 9/10 as well.

Bad Wolf on Ep 3: This episode has to be one of my favourite of series . It was a brilliant story and I loved some of Gene Hunts funny phrases. Overall I would give this a 9/10 for one brilliant story.

Episode Four: A local nightclub owner and police informant "Stephen Warren", is using stand over tactics and extortion across the city. Gene permits this because Warren keeps the streets clean. Sam won't stand for it and sets out to put Warren away. He is distracted when he runs into his mother as a young woman.

Cyberman on Ep 4: This episode tugged at my heart strings, in a way I had not expected as it covered a subject which is very close to me personally, nightclubs. As I have previously mentioned in this blog, I used to DJ and the scenarios in this are reminiscent of my own experience in the industry. Yes I to, have had the unfortunate experience of coming face-to-face with the underworld, which is something I would not wish on anyone. Aside from this angle, the episode features famous singer (an actor playing him that is) Mark Bollan from 70's super group T-Rex. I give this one 9 as well, as its not perfect but comes very, very close! Also a nice introduction to Sam's mum.

Bad Wolf on Ep 4: This episode highlight has to be meeting Sam Tyler's mum and how easily he is distracted when he meets people who exist in his time period. Overall i would give this one a 7/10 also as it is a quite emotional but good story.

Episode Five: Sam, Gene and Annie go under cover as bartenders to solve a soccer related murder. The team are under very tight time restraints, to solve the crime. There is a big game on Saturday, which they believe will turn into a bloodbath if they don't.

Cyberman on Ep 5: To those of you who aren't sports fans, this is the episode you will like the least. It is very soccer-centric, and I personally don't like sport all. This episodes redeeming feature to me was the fact that it gave us a kind-of history lesson on sports violence, so kudos to kudos for that. I give this episode a 5/10, that's just me though. I imagine BW will differ to me greatly on this one!

Bad Wolf on Ep 5: Well right you are Rob I thoroughly enjoyed this episode as it relates to something I am interested in, football. I thought the overall plot was very interesting as we believe that a city fan has killed a united fan in light of the weekends game. Overall I would give this a 8/10.

Episode Six: In 2006 Sam's life support is about to be switched off, whilst in 1973 a local newspaper is under siege. Sam's flashbacks / daydreams, lead him to believe if he saves the hostages he will save himself. He has to save the hostages by 2.00pm or the hostages will be shot.

Cyberman on Ep 6: Another interesting way of connecting the 2 time periods. This one gives you non-stop action from title to title, Sam's life support is due to be shut off at 2.00pm the same time as the hostages are due to be shot in 73. With all of the wars that have happened in the last 40 years, I am certain everybody will meet someone like this war-vet featured in this at some stage in their life. I give this one a 7/10, I dislike war-vets because their misery is everyone elses fault bar their own!

Bad Wolf on Ep 6: I agree that this story is a very interesting way of connecting the time periods. With Sam's life at stake in both scenarios he realises to save himself in the 2006 he must save himself in 1973. I thought the whole hostage situation was brilliant and great to watch. Overall I would give this a 9.5/10

Episode Seven: Sam leads an investigation into a death in custody, with alarming results. He discovers after digging through a web of deceit, that Ray is the cause. When Sam gives his findings to Gene, Ray gets demoted and Sam finds corruption is deep within the station.

Cyberman on Ep 7: This episode sees Sam and Ray going head-to-head, which is great television. Both of them bum out on their goals, Sam gets Ray demoted but really wants him sacked! Ray wants Sam gone, but ends up becoming lower on the food chain instead. This ones an 8, another near perfect piece, but spoiled slightly by its minimal amount of Gene.

Bad Wolf on Ep 7: Although I found this episode good in parts like the fight between Sam and Ray. It didn't particularly interest me as much as the rest of series 1 did. Overall I would give this a 6/10.

Episode Eight: Sam runs into his father during a murder investigation. It turns out Vic Tyler is involved with the porn industry, which he does behind Sam's mothers' back to pay the bills. Sam unravels what some of his flashbacks / daydreams mean. One of them involves Annie.

Cyberman on Ep 8: Sam's Dad in porn, maximum flashbacks! What more can I say the episodes a 9.5/10 to me.

Bad Wolf on Ep 8: Robs review on this episode basically is what I felt about this episode. The whole "Sam realising why his dad left bit" was brilliant. Overall I'd give this a 9/10 a great end to a great series.

In the picture below you see the covers merging or regenerating from one into the other. Seven Days

This film charts the relationship between a man imprisoned for drug smuggling and his wife and is being shot over the course of five years, a few weeks at a time.

More Traffic for Humans, and the Master on Tuesday

Was that cryptic enough for you? Okay the crazy title is there to represent the 3 pieces of news relating to John I am about to give you. The Tuesday part, speaks for itself. It represents the film Tuesday which John Simm and screen buddy Philip Glenister are staring together in. According to the recently launched Philip Glenister.com, the movies website is now live. You can find the link to it over at Phil's site, or simply go to HangmanFilms.co.uk.

The Master part of the title? Well as mentioned earlier in the site in John's recent interview with Richard and Judy, John mentioned that he had not been told his appearance as the Master on Doctor Who had ended. Today over at Outpost Gallifrey, it quotes a recent Q & A with BBC Drama head Julie Gardner, from IF Magazine's website where Julie states "It would be rude not to, and he’s a great character. John Simm is amazing and I would go to work every day with him. His scenes were so much fun to do," she says. Well looks like the Master is set for a return in the near future, lets hope its in series 4.

Finally the more "Traffic for Humans" part, as previously promised to you I will be bringing you a review and comparison for Human Traffic Remixed (the Directors Cut style second version of Human Traffic). Whilst I was hoping to get this to you earlier, I hit several snags along the way. These hurdles to over come have been constant computer issues, of one type or another limiting my ability to bring you the video comparison. I am hoping that this week I will be able to resolve them and get that review out to you, I could give you the review now and the comparison later but I've decided it best to give you both at the same time. Doctor Who Series 3 DVD Cover Revealed

The cover for the series 3 box set of Doctor Who has been revealed. This cover features The Doctor (David Tennant) and the one and only The Master played by John Simm. This cover is unusual as it features The Doctor and The Master rather than in previous years featuring The Doctor and his Companion. Human Traffic Review

Here it is as promised i have finally watched the movie Human Traffic staring non-other than John Simm. The story begins showing Jip (John Simm) working for a clothes shop which he is completely fed-up of doing. All Jip lives for is the week-ends where he goes out with his mates who are Jip, Koop, Nina (Koop's girlfriend), Lulu and Moff. When Jip and Koop talk on the phone they often say the words "Nice one Bruva !!!" After work the team go out to a club in Cardiff on Friday night with devious intentions. They plan to get completely wasted and they also take drugs along the way. However there plan is foiled as they lose a ticket for a club but thanks to some clever talk of Jip they all manage to get inside. Further on in the film we see the relationship between Jip and Lulu grow and we also find out Jipp has sexual paranoia. Further on Moff has a discussion with a fellow party goer about how Star Wars is a drug fantasy, and the fact that Yoda was always stoned and also Koop and Nina argue over her flirtatious behaviour. Finally Jip and Lulu finally get it together and have sex and Jip gets over his sexual paranoia. Jip concludes his narration throughout the play by ending with the words "'It's an insane world, but I'm proud to be part of it." This movie is certainly worth watching for any fan of John Simm as he shone throughout the movie but beware it is a 18 so you will be unable to watch it if you are under that age.

This film will also feature his partner in crime Phillip Glenister who's autograph i happened to receive today but that's another story. The two will star alongside each other as bank robbers. Richard and Judy do John

Last week as earlier reported by Bad Wolf, John was treated to a ritual grilling from talk show hosts Richard and Judy on their program. During the interview John discusses his work on Life On Mars, his appearance as "The Master" on Doctor Who and his current stage show. John appears on the show with co-star Adrian Bower of "Teachers" fame.

During the interview John was asked about his future with both Life On Mars and Doctor Who. John quite firmly denied an appearance in the upcoming sequel series "Ashes To Ashes", but went on to add that his future in Doctor Who is not certain at present. At least that's not a no. Richard and Judy tell him they were suitably impressed by his performance and want him to play The Master again. Are you listening Russell? Even a rival network wants John as The Master.

The Original or the Remix?

Hello everyone, welcome to my first entry on John Simm PR. You are probably wondering about the title of the post, aren't you? Well in the club scene when there are different versions of a track available, they are generally known as remixes or mixes. As you would have read a few posts ago Bad Wolf will be doing a write up on Human Traffic, one of John's earlier movies from 1999.

As the movie is about the club scene in Cardiff, instead of a being a "REDUX" or "Directors Cut" the producers decided on an original name for a new edit of the film. To keep in line with the topic of the movie, there is also Human Traffic Remixed available. This version differs greatly from the original, like most remixes. I will post a comparison video showing you the differences in the ways the versions were done. Obviously I will not post the entire movies (it would have been nice though), but instead will offer you the first 5 to 10 minutes. So you can see the differences.

The 2 covers for the alternate editions can be seen below. This movie was what got me into liking John as an actor, I suppose probably because I could relate to it on a personal level. In the mid '90s when the movie is set, I was a practicing DJ and night club promoter. Many characters in this movie remind me of people I knew back then, especially John's character "Jipp". The eager club regular is a mish mash of possibly every extreme punter, you could ever meet. It has an awesome '90s soundtrack (as to be expected), featuring artists such as CJ Bolland, Fat Boy Slim, Orbital, Underworld, Primal Scream and everybody's favorite DJ the one and only Carl Cox. Carl Cox also acts in this movie and plays the night club owner.

When Bad Wolf has given you his critique on the original, I will give you mine on the Remix. It only seems appropriate. This movie has connections to the world of Doctor Who as well, not only does it feature John (The Master). It also has Shaun Parkes playing the role of "Koop", Shaun played Captain Zachary Cross Flane in "The Satan Pit / The Impossible Planet" and Helen Griffin plays "Jipp's Mum". Helen's character, you would all remember as Mrs Moore in "The Age Of Steel / Rise of the Cybermen" who helped the Doctor with her electro-magnetic bomb.

Doctor Who Episode 13 Last Of The Timelords

Last Of The Timelords was The Last Episode Of John Simm's appearance in Doctor Who and it finished in the usual finale fashion. The story continues one year on from The Master starting to take control of earth where now Earth is fully conquered by our Lord and Master. Meanwhile stories travel that only Martha Jones can defeat the Master. Also in this jam-packed tale we learn the truth about the Toclafaine and why they will make the Doctors hearts break. The Toclafaine are in fact the humans that the Doctor helped rescue in the first part of this 3 part epic which the Master went back to the future to change them. As the story continues we eventually realise that Martha has not travelled the world to get the parts for a weapon to kill The Master she has in fact travelled to tell a story about one fantastic man named The Doctor which eventually contributes to The Masters terrible end. At the dying end we learn that Captain Jack Harkness was once called The Face Of Boe which leads suspicions that he is in fact The Face Of Boe we know and love and this would explain why Boe knows theres another Time Lord. This story also see's the end for now to the amazing Martha Jones who has travelled with The Doctor all the way through Series 3. Overall i would give this episode a 10/10.

Expect Some Human Traffic

If you did not already know the brilliant John Simm once starred in a movie entitled Human Traffic. Human Traffic is a 1999 film directed and written by Justin Kerrigan. It is based around a group of friends living in Cardiff and their clubbing exploits over the course of one weekend, including sexual exploits and drug use. Well of course this post does have a point as i have recently ordered this on DVD so expect a full review soon on the performance of John Simm.

A Possible Return For John?

As you may have seen last Saturday night in the last episode of Doctor Who it was also John's last appearance in the series for the time being. Although at the end it did seem that Johns character (The Master) was still alive at the end of the episode. So could this mean a possible recall for John to return to the role? or maybe if The Master does return it will sadly be a newly regenerated master (basically no John). I personally hope that this means a recall for John but i suppose were going to have to wait and find out.

Saxons Five-Year Project

Now that John Simm went crashing out of Doctor Who last night in typical Who fashion he now has agreed to serve time. John Simm has signed up to play a UK prison inmate in a Channel 4 docu-drama 7 days to be filmed over five years for broadcast in 2012. Shot by director Michael Winterbottom over a real time period it will provide authenticity in the ageing process of Simm's character and the five-year separation from his family. Doctor Who Episode 12 The Sound Of Drums

The penultimate episode of Doctor Who came last Saturday with a bang as it was yet another fantastic episode. The main highlight of the episode has to be John Simms brilliant acting as The Master. The story followed on from The Doctor's, Martha's and Captain Jacks sticky situation at the end of the episode Utopia but off course thanks to Captain Jacks so called Space Hopper they manged to escape. They return to planet earth to find that Harold Saxon has been elected the prime minster of Great Britain. But in fact Mr Saxon is The Master. Mr Saxon explains to the world that finally Planet Earth will take its place in the universe as a new species are heading to earth, The Toclafane. But of course this made up species are not all that they seem. The story goes on following the trio as they work out what to do to stop The Master. As well as all this The Doctor also talks about his home Gallifrey and the academy which surprisingly made The Master who he is. Captain Jack also reveals a secret off his own that he works for Torchwood which fans off the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood will already know about. Overall i would give this episode a 9.5/10

The latest issue of the Radio times magazine on sale today comes complete with its usual excitement and more. Because in this issue like the latest Doctor Who Magazine ( On Sale the 28th June) it comes with two different covers both related to the hit show Doctor Who. On the front of one of the covers is The Doctor played by non other than David Tennant.

On the second cover however guess which Doctor Who star is to be shown. Well you guessed it because it is of course the newly regenerated master John Simm himself. John or The Master is holding in his hand a laser screwdriver who'd have sonic?

Doctor Who Episode 11 Utopia

Utopia has to be the best way to describe episode 11 of Doctor Who series 3. Why? well apart from probably the best script and most action packed episode of series 3 it also saw the return of two old faces Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and The Master (Derek Jacobi and John Simm). Jack's return to Doctor Who was a brilliant display of humour and amazing acting. Whereas the great Derek Jacobi (Professor Yana, The Master) and John Simm's short display of The Master are truly to be admired. The basic story line see's the Tardis with its hitchhiker on board (Jack) being flung into the far future to the end of the universe where Gallaxys have collapsed and one man fights to save his people.
Though of course this one man The Professor is not all that he seems. This story also features a enemy known as The Fututrekind who are believed to be the future for all those stuck and waiting to go to Utopia. As well of all this we also had some exciting flashbacks of Rose, Captain Jack, The Face Of Boe's final words and of course them exciting scenes of The Doctor becoming human. Overall I would give this episode a 9.5/10.

Last Saturday night yet again there was another brilliant episode to be watched but the appearance of a certain someone really livened up the episode. Who was this person? well of course it was the one and only John Simm. Although John only appeared at the end of the episode he will in fact be a guest start in the final two episodes of Doctor Who. John Simm plays The Master who was a recurring character in the classic series of Doctor Who and has just been brought back. A Bit About John

Well since i will soon be posting quite a lot of information on the wonderful John Simm I'd thought I'd start off with some interesting information and back story on him.(Information below tooken from Wikipedia).

Simm was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire and grew up in Nelson, Lancashire. His father, Ronald, was a local musician who taught him to play guitar. John would join his father on stage in the working men’s clubs playing the guitar, he made his debut singing Elvis's Wooden Heart, and they called themselves 'Us2'. He carries his father's name, Ronald, as his middle name.

In the 90s, the band John played guitar in, Magic Alex (named after The Beatles' electrician) toured with Echo and the Bunnymen on two tours, and also sang backing vocals on an album by Echo and the Bunnymen singer Ian McCulloch. He also made his TV debut in 1992 with a role in the TV series Rumpole of the Bailey.He starred in Boston Kickout and won the Best Actor award at the Valencia Film Festival.
In 1997 John starred in the first series of the critically acclaimed and often controversial The Lakes, a BBC series written by Jimmy McGovern. In 1999 he starred in the second series of The Lakes as well as appearing in Human Traffic and Wonderland.
In 2000 he starred in the opening episode of the acclaimed drama Clocking Off written by Paul Abbott, who he would later work with again for the award-winning political thriller series State of Play.
In 2002 he featured in the film 24 Hour Party People as enigmatic New Order frontman Bernard Sumner. It was also this year that he played Raskolnikov in the BBC adaptation of Crime and Punishment which is also his favourite book. At a live concert in Finsbury Park the same year, Simm sang "Digital" onstage with New Order.
In 2004 he played a researcher and investigator for a charity in a Channel 4 drama Sex Traffic, the hard hitting drama that follows the plight of two young Moldovan sisters sold into sexual slavery.

He recently starred as Detective Inspector Sam Tyler in the popular 2006 BBC series Life on Mars in which he played a police officer apparently sent back in time to 1973. The second series began on BBC One on February 13, 2007. The show won the Pioneer Audience Award for Best Programme at the 2007 BAFTA TV Awards, although Simm lost out on the award for Best Actor.In March 2007, he appeared on Channel 4 in The Yellow House, a biographical drama produced by talkbackTHAMES about the lives of artists Vincent van Gogh (Simm) and Paul Gauguin (John Lynch).
In February 2007, it was reported that Simm was to appear in the third (current) series of the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who as the Master. Simm himself on the Simon Mayo radio programme on Five Live on March 22, 2007, confirmed he would appear on Doctor Who as "Mr Saxon". He made his first appearance on the June 16, 2007 episode, "Utopia", where he appeared as the Master, a recurring enemy of the Doctor, following Derek Jacobi's brief portrayal of the character.
In April 2007, it was announced that Simm would resume the role of Cal McCaffrey in the second series of State of Play, with Bill Nighy also returning to the show although Simm has said himself that he would not be reprising the role. It is not known if the likes of David Morrissey and Philip Glenister will return to the show.
He will reunite with his Life on Mars co-star Philip Glenister— with whom he also appeared in Clocking Off and State of Play—in the forthcoming 1980s-set crime film Tuesday, in which the pair play bank robbers. Upon the announcement of the film, Glenister joked that he and Simm were contractually obliged to work with each other once a year.
